Blog Week 12
One of the two articles that best defines the core of my research topic is Adverse Health Consequences of Performance-Enhancing Drugs: An Endocrine Society Scientific Statement, by Harrison Pope, Ruth Wood, Alan Rogol, Fred Nyber, Larry Bowers, and Shalender Bhasin. This article was published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).
The second article that best defines the core of my research topic is The Only Good Reason to Ban Steroids in Baseball: To Prevent an Arms Race, by Jacob Beck. This article was published by the magazine The Atlantic.
These two articles provide a great deal of research pertaining to performance enhancing drugs. There are many elements to my research paper that will guide my audience to the understanding that I would like them to have. I believe that mostly everyone is at least familiar with the term “performance enhancing drugs”. However, I think that many are unfamiliar with the specific types of performance enhancing drugs. I also believe that many are unfamiliar with the vast number of side effects that occur to those who take such drugs. That is one element that I would like the audience to understand- the vast types of performance enhancing drugs and the vast side effects of those. Next, I would like to have the audience get an understanding of the counter argument. Lastly, I would like the audience to see my points in why I believe PED’s are bad for sports. Such reasoning includes the fact that PED use is cheating, it is immoral, and it is unsafe for the athletes. Also, use of PED’s does not set a good example for children who look up to these athletes.
These two sources are key to my research. The first article is an amazing piece for research. I learned a lot about my own topic through this article. The article is split up into many different sections. The sections that I found most relevant included the definitions section, the history section, and the adverse health effects section. This article was composed of many doctors, one of which even attended Harvard Medical school. This article is key to my research because of the information that it provided me with. I recently found this article, so I have yet to include many of it in my own essay. I will be using this article to revise much of what I have already written.
The second article is a very different article.
Interestingly, the article specifically talks about steroid use in the MLB.
However, much of what the author wrote applies to all sports. What was also
interesting about this article, is that it attempts to explain why such reasons
for the common rejection of steroids are flawed. However, I disagree with the
author. I am going to use his reasoning for two purposes. One purpose will be
to further my own argument, using the same arguments that the author tries to
debunk. Secondly, I will use the author’s reasoning in my rebuttal. I will
display some of his reasons, and then explain why the author is wrong.
I have found that I still have much work to do with my essay. I believe I have more research to do, and I need to organize my essay in a better way. That being said, these articles provide great information that I will be sure to use in my essay. I will be redoing a lot of my written work, with these two pieces included in the new work.
